Chinese Seal Carving
One of the hobby I enjoy is to make Seal Carvings for my friends. I picked it up during my Secondary school days. It takes about 3 to 4 hours for me to carve each stone (which are marble usually). Each seal cost as little as $10 to hundreds of dollars, depending on the quality of the stones. I have not practise this art for a few years already as I don't have much time to spare. But I'll try to carve a few later in the year. Here are some of the carvings I've made.
This is a 2 character yinyang seal. The name of the seal is lingpiao. Yin means the character is in white while the background is red. For Yang means that the character is in red while the background is white in colour. Generally, it is easier to make the yin seal. The chips on the borders are made purposely to create an artistic look. Below are some more of my work.
The characters in the seals are ancient writings going back more than 2,000 years. This art requires a lot of patience because you have to have steady hands to carve out the stone. If you make a mistake, you'll have to grind down that layer and redo all over again. I hope that I'll be able to continue this form of art. So if you want your name carved, email me and I try to carve for you. It's not free though, you'll have to pay for the stones. The average stones would cost about $20 to $40 depending on the quality and art work on the seal.
